“You really wanna know the man? Or should I say kid?”

[Steve’s smile returned within a heartbeat. Leave it to Eames to make the blond feel right at home again. Since he’d left Brooklyn and joined the armed forces there wasn’t much of a home. Often finding himself dug in, half-assed foxholes, while the German’s shelled the hell out of them. Silence would fall and in those moments his mind wandered far from the battle field. He pictured Eames, some where in England’s countryside, walking the vast, rolling hills. He’d imagine him smiling softly, running his fingers through the tall, uncut blades of grass. Though such simple thoughts were always disrupted as the enemy would open fire once more.]

“No need to apologize, it was years ago and ‘sides—they aren’t suffering anymore. I mean, not that I don’t miss ‘em, just…gotta be strong for them, y’know?"

[His eyes remained closed as a sigh worked it’s way past the soldier’s lips. It was a heavy subject for Steve and yet just being near the other was enough to lessen the pain. If only he could ask for the other to stay, even if it were for a minute or two longer, it was better than nothing.]

"—Ha, a loon, really?”

[Maybe he was for getting himself into something that was much bigger than he had ever thought. All Steve wanted was to defend the innocent and protect the weak. In his eyes the Nazis were bullies, picking on other countries that could hardly defend themselves and for what? Because one man thought the German’s above the rest? It was sickening to even think about it.]

“Uh-huh, so you better be comin’ back one way or another. I don’t care if I’ve gotta crawl through enemy lines to drag your sorry ass back—I’ll do it.”

[It’s not so much a threat as it is Rogers teasing the other. Then again he’d do just that if word ever gotten back that Eames was a prisoner of war. Far too long had things been drug out between the two of them and being separated for months at a time wasn’t exactly helping their situation either. Briefly the Captain lifted his head and through half lidded eyes he held the other’s gaze before placing a hand to Eames’ cheek.]

“Egal, was von hier aus geschieht, weiß nur, dass Sie immer über mein Herz, viel Glück.”

“Of course I want to know the man, you git. I wouldn’t’ve asked ifn I didn’t want to.”

[A kid. Eames never would have called Steve a kid. Yes they all looked you and some of them just might have been kids. But in his eyes the man on his chest would be just that – a man. And he’d done something he never expected to happen. He’d made him happy, he’d given him something to look forward to, he’d given him a reason to return to the Allied side and not just stay in Berlin. Each time he went behind the enemy lines his thoughts always drifted back to Steve, wanting to know if he was safe. It was war and he knew that one day they might not ever come back to each other. But he always hoped for the best.]

“Yeah, can imagine so. Mean both my parents are still alive so it’s hard t'imagine your situation. But always better ifn they aren’t suffering. No one deserves that sorta fate.”

[He knew it wasn’t easy for him to talk about his parents. It wasn’t easy for anyone to talk about loss. Eames had lost friends in the war but that was nothing compared to family. It only served to have him tightening his grip on Steve, wanting to hold him close and remind him that they would always have each other. That wasn’t something that was going to change. They each had their jobs to do and yes it was a dangerous world for them but in the end they would always have each other to come home to.]

“Could always say you’ve gone on a bender. Mean what else would you say? Don’t get me wrong I mean I’m glad you did. Wouldn’t’ve met you had you not. Just think you’re a nutter for wanting to actually fight when most of us would’ve preferred anything but.”

[Had he been given a chance he wouldn’t’ve enlisted, he would have stayed far away from the war. It wasn’t that Eames didn’t want to fight for his country. He just didn’t think this war was something he wanted to get involved in. He had his mum and sister to take care of. They needed him far more than this war did. But he hadn’t been given a choice and there he was, playing both sides of the war. The only good thing in his life was Steve and he would hold onto that for as long as he could.]

“I promise. You’ve given me something to return for. Short of being captured or hurt, I’ll always return for you. Though you better make the same promise to me. Don’t think I could handle not knowing what’s happened to you. I love you, Rogers. Never forget that.”

[This night was harder than he’d imagined. As the time slipped away, he knew that leaving him again was going to be the worst. It made sense now – why they’d told him not to get involved. His heart hurt knowing that he would once again have to leave the captain behind. This mission was like no other and he had no idea if he’d come back alive or not. He wanted to. He had to. For Steve. For what they shared between them.]
