Natasha heard the ringing in her ears before she felt her eyes start to blink open. “hmm…” she groaned, blinking her eyes awake. She hadn’t seen him in weeks, since she left to try and work herself out. To clear her head so she could make this work, make them work. Natasha had been on her way up to the apartment post her long mission to come and see him. When she got into a fight in the staircase, one wrong move and the needle was in her neck.
As her vision became less hazy, she could see Eames sitting across from her, studying his face first. That’s when the lights clicked on and voice came through a speaker she could barely understand. “You have thirty minutes. Make a decision, Natalia.”. Wasn’t it always geared towards her?
“Eames…” she whispered. “I’m so sorry…” she said, the trigger tight in her hand. “Just press the button. You know it’s the right thing."“We were on our getaway in Prague, you know how we left that Thursday night. We went out to the bar on Friday night, somehow our drinks were drugged and it was an enemy of yours. Put us into some sort of torturous dream like state, there was another lever so SHIELD says. After that we were going to die in the dream that we would go into another scenario, every time it would lead to us dying until we went insane. The goal was to make sure we so messed up that we couldn’t tell life from dream state and kill ourselves trying to get out of the dream."
It was mentally fucked up, but Natasha had to give them that it was genius.
"We’re fine now. It’s in your pocket if you want to check. I told them not to touch it. Knew you would want it by you when you woke up.” she said, referring to his totem. Her fingers remained laced with his, but let them go so he could test it, kissing his knuckles before.
"I meant everything I said, by the way. I know we need to talk about it, and before I see with you if this is a dream, I want you to know I stand right by my words. I want this, with you.”
He should have known that eventually his past would catch up to him. It was how it always seemed to happen – any time he was actually happy something reminded him that it was nothing more than a façade, that happiness was a luxury he’d no longer be able to have. And this time he’d gotten Nat involved. Not only involved but injured as well. That didn’t sit well with Eames. He’d always tried to keep her out of is world. Even though he knew she was more than capable of protecting herself. It was just who he was – always trying to protect those he cared about. And just like in the past he’d failed. The only difference between the two was the fact Nat was still alive where as his family had paid the ultimate price. As much as he cared for the woman next to him maybe it was for the best to push her away. Like she’d been doing to him.
“M'sorry,” he muttered, his hand going for his pocket and finding his totem. The grooves on it told him he was in reality, even though there was still that lingering doubt. Eames had to give them credit – slowly drive a person crazy in a dream, have them doubt reality – no one would ever think of such a thing. Except those in the dream sharing world. “Should’ve known one day it would come back t'haunt me, us. Seems like every time I get a bit of happiness something comes round to remind me it’s just not for me.” His eyes flicker down to their joined hands and he couldn’t – he couldn’t just walk away from her. She’d burrowed into his heart and walking away was no longer an option. But how could they continue doing this if his own past was going to continually put them both at risk?
His eyes moved from their joined hands to Nat’s face, a look of shock clearly visible. After everything that had happened she still wanted this? “I want this, too, Nat,” he told her, knowing that it would be putting her in even more danger. “Even after all of this, and knowing that we still need t'talk bout it all, I want you, too.”
